“If we don’t act now, by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans.”
Partnering for a Cleaner Ocean: Our Collaboration with Healthy Seas
We’re thrilled to be a partner with Healthy Seas, a remarkable organisation dedicated to combating marine debris and promoting healthier aquatic ecosystems. As we navigate the challenges posed by plastic pollution in our oceans, we believe that working alongside Healthy Seas is not only beneficial for the environment but also pivotal for the future of our industry.
A Critical Challenge
As the alarming statistic goes, “If we don’t act now, by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans.” This reality underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices and innovative solutions. Healthy Seas has been at the forefront of tackling marine litter, specifically ghost nets, which pose a significant threat to marine life. These abandoned fishing nets account for nearly 10% of all ocean plastic, entangling countless marine species and damaging fragile ecosystems. This roughly translates to between 500,000 and 1 million tons of fishing gear abandoned in the ocean each year. Ghost gear impacts marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles, and more, and is the type of debris that has proven to be the most lethal.
Healthy Seas: A Mission with Impact
Healthy Seas has established a comprehensive mission to address the problem of marine debris. Over the past decade, they have engaged a global network of volunteers, divers, fishermen, educators, and waste managers. Their efforts not only focus on the removal of harmful debris but also on repurposing it into high-quality, sustainable products with the help of partners. At the heart of this initiative is the transformation of collected nylon fishing nets into innovative fabrics through the ECONYL® Regeneration System. This cutting-edge process, developed by Aquafil, turns nylon waste into first-grade nylon, maintaining the same quality as fossil-based alternatives while being infinitely recyclable. This means that every piece of clothing made from ECONYL® can be recycled again and again, reducing the demand for new materials and minimizing waste.
